Navigating the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)

The EU ETS, effective from January 1, 2024, mandates that shipping companies monitor and report their CO2 emissions, with the requirement to purchase allowances corresponding to their emission levels. This regulation applies to ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above, affecting energy consumption within and between EU ports, as well as 50% of the energy used on voyages where either the departure or arrival port is outside the EU.
